King David became great because the Lord was with him. This is clearly stated in the King James Bible:

"And David went on, and grew great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him."
David’s greatness was not just due to his military skill or leadership, but because of his relationship with God. Throughout his life, he sought the Lord, trusted Him, and gave Him credit for his victories.
