Text: Ecclesiastes 12:1, 13-14 (KJV)
"Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;"
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."
Why Did God Create Man?
One of the greatest questions that has occupied the minds of men throughout history is this: Why did God create us? Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? What gives meaning to our existence?
Many spend their entire lives searching for answers. Some pursue wealth, believing that riches will satisfy the longing of the soul. Others chase fame, power, education, pleasure, or accomplishments. Yet after obtaining these things, many discover that there is still an emptiness within.
The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon, perhaps the wisest and wealthiest man who ever lived. He experienced everything the world could offer. He possessed wisdom, riches, influence, pleasure, and success beyond what most people could imagine.
Yet after examining life apart from God, Solomon repeatedly declared, "Vanity of vanities; all is vanity." Everything under the sun was temporary and unable to provide lasting fulfillment.
However, Solomon did not end his book in despair. Instead, he concluded with a clear declaration regarding the purpose of life and the duty of every human being.
God did not create us merely to exist. He created us for Himself. We are valuable because of His grace, His love, and His purpose for our lives.
The world measures value by appearance, wealth, intelligence, or influence. God measures value differently. Our value is found in the fact that we were created in His image and are recipients of His marvelous grace.
When we understand our God-given duties, life becomes meaningful. Without God, life is vanity. With God, life has purpose, direction, and eternal significance.
From our text we discover five duties that belong to every man, woman, and child.
Duty #1. Find God
"Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth..." (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
The first responsibility of every person is to find God.
Solomon begins by saying, "Remember now thy Creator." To remember God means more than simply acknowledging His existence. It means seeking Him, knowing Him, trusting Him, and making Him the center of our lives.
Many people remember everything except God. They remember business appointments, investments, entertainment schedules, and personal ambitions, yet they neglect the One who gave them life.
The Bible urges us not to delay seeking God.
"For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:2)
Today is the day to seek God. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Find God in Every Opportunity
Every circumstance of life presents an opportunity to know God better. Whether we experience success or failure, prosperity or hardship, God desires to reveal Himself to us.
Some people seek God only during emergencies. God desires that we seek Him every day.
Find God in Your Plans
Many people make plans without consulting God. They seek His blessing after they have already decided what they want to do.
A wise believer seeks God's direction before making decisions. Whether choosing a career, entering a business venture, pursuing education, or making family decisions, God should be included.
When God directs our steps, we avoid many unnecessary mistakes and heartaches.
Find God in Your Travels
Whether we travel across the world or simply navigate daily responsibilities, God should remain our guide.
Life itself is a journey. Every day presents new opportunities to trust Him and walk with Him.
For Our Serenity
One of the greatest blessings of finding God is peace.
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you..." (John 14:27)
The world offers temporary distractions. Christ offers genuine peace.
When we know God, we can cast our burdens upon Him.
"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1 Peter 5:7)
God's presence brings comfort in times of uncertainty, fear, and difficulty.
For Our Supply
Finding God also means trusting Him as our Provider.
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)
God knows our needs before we even ask Him. When we place Him first, He faithfully provides according to His wisdom and grace.
Duty #2. Fear God
"Fear God..." (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
The second duty of man is to fear God.
Many misunderstand biblical fear. It is not merely terror. It is reverence, respect, awe, and submission toward a holy God.
To fear God means recognizing His authority and responding with humble obedience.
It Is Our Wisdom
True wisdom begins with the fear of God.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom..." (Proverbs 9:10)
A person may possess academic degrees, business expertise, and worldly knowledge, yet still lack wisdom if he does not fear God.
Wisdom comes from seeing life through God's perspective.
It Produces Holiness
"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil..." (Proverbs 8:13)
When we genuinely fear God, we learn to hate what God hates and love what God loves.
The fear of God becomes a powerful safeguard against sin.
Because of God's Wrath
Scripture also reminds us that God's holiness includes His righteous judgment against sin.
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men..." (Romans 1:18)
God is loving, merciful, and gracious, but He is also just. The fear of God reminds us that sin has consequences and that we are accountable to Him.
Duty #3. Follow God
"...and keep his commandments..." (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
Finding God is not enough. Fearing God is not enough. We must also follow Him.
Solomon says, "Keep his commandments."
Obedience is the evidence of genuine faith.
Many admire God's truth without applying it. Others agree with God's Word intellectually but refuse to submit practically.
God calls us to follow Him daily.
For Our Promotion
The world often teaches self-promotion, but God teaches God-centered promotion.
Throughout Scripture, God honored individuals who faithfully obeyed Him.
Joseph was promoted because he remained faithful in adversity.
Daniel was promoted because he honored God in a hostile culture.
David was promoted because he trusted God.
God knows how to elevate His servants according to His perfect timing.
For Our Blessings
Obedience positions us to experience God's blessings.
This does not mean a life free from problems. Rather, it means enjoying God's favor, guidance, protection, and presence.
The safest place in life is within the will of God.
Following God provides direction when life becomes confusing and strength when life becomes difficult.
Duty #4. Foresee God's Judgments
"For God shall bring every work into judgment..." (Ecclesiastes 12:14)
The fourth duty of man is to live with an awareness of coming judgment.
Modern society often ignores accountability. People live as though actions have no consequences.
However, Solomon reminds us that every person will answer to God.
Every Person Will Give Account
"So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." (Romans 14:12)
No one can answer for us on that day. Our family, friends, employers, and pastors cannot stand in our place.
Each individual must personally give an account before God.
Christ Will Reward According to Works
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." (Matthew 16:27)
God sees every act of service, sacrifice, generosity, and obedience.
Nothing escapes His attention.
Likewise, every hidden sin, every selfish motive, and every act of rebellion is fully known to Him.
Living with eternity in view transforms our priorities. It causes us to invest in things that truly matter.
Every Secret Thing
Verse 14 emphasizes that God will judge "every secret thing."
People may hide things from family, friends, and society, but nothing is hidden from God.
This truth should produce both comfort and caution.
God sees our secret faithfulness and our secret failures. Therefore, we should live honestly and sincerely before Him.
Duty #5. Be Faithful to God
The final duty flowing from these truths is faithfulness.
God deserves our faithfulness because He has always been faithful to us.
Because He Is Faithful
"God is faithful..." (1 Corinthians 1:9)
Throughout history, God has demonstrated His faithfulness.
He keeps His promises.
He fulfills His Word.
He never abandons His children.
Even when we fail Him, He remains faithful.
His faithfulness should inspire our devotion and loyalty.
Because of His Blessings
Every good thing we enjoy ultimately comes from God.
Our health, opportunities, families, provisions, abilities, and salvation are gifts from His gracious hand.
Gratitude should produce faithfulness.
When we remember His goodness, we become motivated to serve Him more wholeheartedly.
Because He Deserves It
Beyond His blessings, God deserves our faithfulness simply because of who He is.
He is our Creator.
He is our Sustainer.
He is our Redeemer.
He is our Lord.
He is worthy of our love, worship, obedience, and devotion.
Faithfulness means serving God when it is easy and when it is difficult. It means remaining loyal regardless of circumstances.
From Vanity to Purpose
Solomon spent much of Ecclesiastes describing the emptiness of life apart from God.
Again and again he declared, "Vanity of vanities."
Wealth is vanity without God.
Pleasure is vanity without God.
Success is vanity without God.
Knowledge is vanity without God.
Life itself becomes vanity when God is excluded.
But when we embrace our God-given responsibilities, life becomes meaningful.
Our whole duty is clear:
- Find God.
- Fear God.
- Follow God.
- Foresee God's judgments.
- Be faithful to God.
These duties transform existence into purpose, uncertainty into direction, and vanity into significance.
The world continues searching for meaning, but God has already provided the answer.
Life is most meaningful when it is lived for the One who created us.
May we remember our Creator, fear Him, follow Him faithfully, live with eternity in view, and remain steadfast in our devotion until we stand before Him.
For indeed, as Solomon declared:
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." (Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV)
