Every person is building something. Some are building careers. Others are building families, businesses, ministries, dreams, and ambitions. Yet the most important structure any person will ever build is his life. The question is not whether you are building — the question is what foundation are you building upon?
In Matthew 7:24-27 (KJV), the Lord Jesus Christ gave a powerful illustration about two builders. One built upon a rock, and the other built upon sand. Both houses faced storms, floods, and winds, but only one remained standing.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:” — Matthew 7:24 KJV
The storms of life are unavoidable. Trials will come. Temptations will come. Financial struggles, sickness, disappointments, betrayals, and even spiritual battles will arise. The only life that will stand is the life built upon the Lord Jesus Christ.
A strong and godly life is not built accidentally. It is built carefully, prayerfully, and biblically. Let us examine four essential truths in building a life that stands firm before God and through the storms of this world.
1. Built on a Strong and Wise Foundation
“And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” — Matthew 7:25 KJV
A building is only as strong as its foundation. A beautiful structure with a weak foundation is dangerous. In the same way, a successful-looking life without God is unstable and temporary.
The rock foundation is God Himself and the Lord Jesus Christ.
“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer...” — Psalm 18:2 KJV
“And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 10:4 KJV
If your life is founded upon money, popularity, education, achievements, or human wisdom alone, your foundation will eventually crack. But when your life is built upon Christ, it can withstand the storms of life.
God has provided four important “corners” of the spiritual building that strengthen our foundation.
A. Salvation
The first and most important foundation is salvation through Jesus Christ. No man can build a lasting life apart from being reconciled to God.
Salvation is not found in religious rituals, human goodness, traditions, or personal merit. Salvation is found only in Christ.
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 3:11 KJV
A person may appear moral outwardly while remaining spiritually lost inwardly. True life begins when a sinner repents and trusts Christ as Lord and Saviour.
Without salvation, the foundation is incomplete.
B. The Word of God
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” — Matthew 4:4 KJV
The Bible is spiritual nourishment for the believer. Just as the body cannot survive without food, the soul cannot grow without the Word of God.
Many people own Bibles but rarely read them. Others hear preaching but never apply the truths personally. Jesus emphasized not only hearing His sayings but also doing them.
We must:
- Accept the Word of God as truth.
- Apply the Word of God daily.
- Be acquainted with the Word of God through study and meditation.
The Bible gives wisdom for decisions, comfort in sorrow, strength during temptation, and guidance for daily living.
A life disconnected from Scripture becomes spiritually weak and easily deceived.
C. The Church
“For as the body is one, and hath many members...” — 1 Corinthians 12:12 KJV
“And he is the head of the body, the church...” — Colossians 1:18 KJV
God never intended Christians to live isolated spiritual lives. The church is a spiritual family where believers worship, learn, encourage, and serve together.
A faithful church strengthens believers through:
- Biblical preaching
- Fellowship
- Prayer
- Encouragement
- Accountability
- Service opportunities
When believers neglect church, they often become spiritually cold and vulnerable to discouragement and error.
Christ is the Head of the church, and every believer has a role in serving Him faithfully.
D. Prayer
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” — Philippians 4:6 KJV
Prayer is communication with God. A strong life is built by people who know how to seek the Lord continually.
Prayer is not merely a religious routine. It is dependence upon God. Through prayer:
- We receive wisdom.
- We find peace.
- We gain spiritual strength.
- We overcome anxiety.
- We grow closer to God.
Many believers struggle spiritually because prayer has become neglected. The strongest Christians are not necessarily the most talented, educated, or wealthy — often they are simply people who pray faithfully.
2. Have a Stable Faith
A properly built life requires stable faith. Faith is confidence and trust in God even when circumstances seem uncertain.
“Trust in the LORD, and do good...” — Psalm 37:3 KJV
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 KJV
The world teaches people to trust themselves, their emotions, their resources, or human systems. But the Bible teaches us to trust the Lord fully.
Faith becomes stable through continual dependence upon God.
A. Faith Trusts God Completely
Human understanding is limited. Many times we do not understand why trials happen or why doors close. Yet faith continues trusting God’s wisdom.
A stable believer does not panic every time difficulty appears. He remembers that God remains faithful.
B. Faith Grows Through Prayer
“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” — Luke 17:5 KJV
Faith is strengthened when we walk closely with God. Prayer deepens our dependence upon Him and reminds us that He is in control.
C. Faith Removes Fear
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” — John 14:1 KJV
Fear weakens spiritual stability. The believer who trusts Christ can rest even during uncertainty because God never loses control.
Storms may shake the world around us, but they should not destroy the peace within us.
D. Faith Pleases God
“But without faith it is impossible to please him...” — Hebrews 11:6 KJV
Faith honors God because it acknowledges His power, goodness, and faithfulness.
When believers continue trusting God despite hardship, they demonstrate genuine spiritual maturity.
E. Faith Is Spiritual Protection
“Above all, taking the shield of faith...” — Ephesians 6:16 KJV
Faith acts as a shield against doubt, temptation, fear, discouragement, and spiritual attacks.
Satan seeks to weaken believers through lies and confusion, but faith anchored in God’s Word protects the heart and mind.
F. Faith Gives Victory
“And this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” — 1 John 5:4 KJV
The believer overcomes not through personal strength but through trusting God faithfully.
Stable faith produces stability in life.
3. Get Sufficient Funds — God’s Provisions
Many people worry constantly about finances, security, and future needs. While money is necessary for daily living, believers must remember that God is the ultimate Provider.
A life built God’s way includes biblical stewardship and trusting God for provision.
A. Seek God First
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33 KJV
Jesus taught that spiritual priorities must come before material pursuits.
Many people seek wealth first and place God second. But biblical living reverses that order. When believers prioritize obedience, worship, and righteousness, God promises to care for their needs according to His will.
Seeking God first means:
- Prioritizing spiritual growth
- Living obediently
- Serving faithfully
- Trusting God daily
God’s provision may not always come in abundance, but He remains faithful to supply what is needed.
B. Give God First
“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse...” — Malachi 3:10 KJV
“Give, and it shall be given unto you...” — Luke 6:38 KJV
Giving reflects faith and gratitude toward God.
The believer acknowledges that everything belongs to the Lord. Giving is not merely financial duty; it is worship from the heart.
A generous Christian recognizes:
- God owns all things.
- We are stewards, not owners.
- Giving supports the work of God.
- Giving demonstrates faith.
The world teaches selfish accumulation, but Scripture teaches cheerful generosity.
C. Honor God
“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:” — Proverbs 3:9 KJV
Believers should honor God not only with words but also through stewardship, integrity, and faithful management of resources.
When people misuse finances through greed, dishonesty, wastefulness, or covetousness, instability often follows. Wise stewardship builds peace and stability.
Godly financial principles include:
- Honest work
- Contentment
- Wise budgeting
- Avoiding unnecessary debt
- Generosity
- Faithful stewardship
A life built according to God’s principles experiences spiritual richness even during difficult times.
4. Focused on Building for a Secured Future
Many people spend their entire lives worrying about the future. Yet earthly security is uncertain.
“For riches are not for ever...” — Proverbs 27:24 KJV
“For riches certainly make themselves wings...” — Proverbs 23:5 KJV
Money can disappear. Careers can change. Economies can collapse. Human strength eventually fades. True security is found in walking closely with God.
A. Have Intimacy with God
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you...” — James 4:8 KJV
The safest place for any believer is near God.
Intimacy with God is developed through:
- Prayer
- Bible reading
- Obedience
- Worship
- Daily fellowship with Him
A close relationship with God produces peace, wisdom, direction, and spiritual confidence.
B. Integrity in Life
“The integrity of the upright shall guide them...” — Proverbs 11:3 KJV
Integrity means living honestly and consistently before God and men.
A secured future is not built through deception, corruption, manipulation, or dishonesty. Sin may appear profitable temporarily, but eventually it destroys.
God honors people who:
- Speak truthfully
- Deal honestly
- Keep their word
- Live uprightly
- Fear God
Character matters more than appearance.
A strong reputation built through integrity becomes a lasting testimony for Christ.
C. Investments in Ministry and Missions
The greatest investments are eternal investments.
Many people invest only in temporary things while neglecting eternal matters. Scripture teaches believers to invest in the work of God.
Supporting ministry and missions helps:
- Spread the Gospel
- Support faithful servants of God
- Reach souls for Christ
- Strengthen churches
- Advance biblical truth
Earthly investments eventually fade, but eternal investments have everlasting value.
“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven...” — Matthew 6:20 KJV
What Kind of Life Are You Building?
Jesus concluded His teaching with a solemn warning. The foolish man built upon sand. His house looked acceptable outwardly, but when the storms came, it collapsed completely.
“And great was the fall of it.” — Matthew 7:27 KJV
Many lives today are built upon unstable foundations:
- Materialism
- Pride
- Popularity
- Human wisdom
- Temporary pleasures
- Self-reliance
These foundations cannot withstand the storms of life or the judgment of God.
The wise builder hears the words of Christ and obeys them. He builds upon the Rock.
To build your life properly:
- Establish a strong foundation in Christ.
- Develop stable faith in God.
- Trust God’s provision faithfully.
- Secure your future through intimacy with God, integrity, and eternal investments.
The storms will come to every life, but the life built upon Christ will stand firm.
Now is the time to examine your foundation. What are you building your life upon?
Build upon the Rock that never fails.
