Why Return to the Almighty?

Our Text: Job 22:23-26 (KJV)

“If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.”

In a world filled with uncertainty, distractions, and spiritual decline, the call to return to God is more urgent than ever. Many people are busy building their lives, pursuing success, and seeking happiness, yet they often neglect the very source of true life—the Almighty God. The Scriptures clearly teach that real restoration, growth, and joy are found not in the world, but in returning to Him.

The passage in Job 22:23-26 provides a powerful and comprehensive picture of what happens when a person genuinely returns to the Almighty. It is not merely a religious action or outward reform, but a deep, inward turning of the heart toward God. This return brings transformation in every aspect of life—spiritual, moral, and even practical.

Let us examine six compelling reasons why we must return to the Almighty.

1. For Our Progress — “Thou shalt be built up” (v.23)

One of the greatest misconceptions in life is that progress is purely material or external. Many measure success by wealth, achievements, or recognition. However, the Bible defines true progress as being “built up” in God.

When a person returns to the Almighty, there is spiritual construction taking place. God begins to rebuild what was broken, strengthen what was weak, and restore what was lost. This is not temporary improvement, but lasting growth rooted in truth and righteousness.

Without God, progress is fragile. A man may rise quickly, but he can fall just as fast. But when God is the builder, the foundation is sure. As it is written elsewhere, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”

Returning to God aligns our life with His will. It gives direction, purpose, and stability. Our decisions become wiser, our character becomes stronger, and our life becomes meaningful. This is true progress—not merely moving forward, but moving in the right direction.

2. For Our Purification — “Thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles” (v.23)

Sin is the greatest hindrance to a meaningful relationship with God. It corrupts the heart, disturbs the conscience, and separates man from his Creator. No amount of external success can compensate for a life polluted by sin.

Returning to the Almighty involves repentance—a deliberate turning away from iniquity. It is not enough to acknowledge sin; it must be put away “far” from us. This speaks of a decisive and intentional separation from sinful practices and influences.

True Christianity is not merely about profession, but transformation. A changed heart leads to a changed life. When God works in a person, He produces holiness. The desire for sin decreases, and the desire for righteousness increases.

Purification is essential because God is holy. If we are to walk with Him, we must pursue holiness. This does not mean perfection in the flesh, but a sincere and ongoing effort to live in obedience to His Word.

Returning to God cleanses the inner life. It restores purity of thought, sincerity of motive, and integrity of conduct. This is a blessing far greater than anything the world can offer.

3. For Our Prosperity — “Thou shalt lay up gold as dust” (v.24)

The prosperity spoken of in this passage must be understood properly. It is not a license for materialism, nor a promise of worldly luxury. Rather, it speaks of God’s blessing upon a life that is aligned with Him.

When a person returns to the Almighty, priorities change. Gold is no longer the master—it becomes like dust. The heart is no longer controlled by riches, but by righteousness. This is true prosperity: having a right relationship with God and a proper perspective on material things.

God may bless materially according to His will, but the greater blessing is contentment, peace, and spiritual richness. A man who has God has everything he truly needs.

Prosperity in the biblical sense includes wisdom, favor, and the ability to live a life that honors God. It is not measured by how much one has, but by how much one walks with God.

4. For Our Protection — “The Almighty shall be thy defence” (v.25)

Life is filled with dangers—physical, emotional, and spiritual. No human effort can fully protect us from the uncertainties of life. But when we return to the Almighty, we find a defense that is sure and unbreakable.

God Himself becomes our protector. This does not mean that we will never face trials, but it assures us that we are never alone. He watches over His people, guides them, and preserves them according to His purpose.

The greatest protection is not from outward harm, but from spiritual destruction. The enemy seeks to deceive, tempt, and destroy. But those who are close to God are guarded by His truth and strengthened by His presence.

Returning to God places us under His divine care. It gives us confidence, not in ourselves, but in Him. We can face life with courage, knowing that the Almighty is our defense.

5. For Our Provision — “Thou shalt have plenty of silver” (v.25)

God is not only our protector, but also our provider. Every good thing we have comes from Him. When we return to the Almighty, we place ourselves in a position to receive His provision.

This provision includes both spiritual and physical needs. God supplies wisdom for decisions, strength for challenges, and grace for every situation. He also provides for our daily necessities according to His will.

The promise of “plenty” does not mean excess or indulgence, but sufficiency. God gives what is needed, when it is needed. He knows what is best for us, and His provision is always perfect.

Returning to God teaches us to trust Him. Instead of worrying about tomorrow, we learn to depend on His faithfulness. This brings peace and removes anxiety, knowing that our life is in His hands.

6. For Our Pleasures — “Thou shalt have thy delight in the Almighty” (v.26)

Perhaps the greatest blessing of returning to the Almighty is the restoration of true joy. The world offers temporary pleasures, but they never satisfy. Only God can fill the deepest longing of the human soul.

When we return to Him, our delight changes. We begin to find joy in His presence, His Word, and His will. This is not forced religion, but genuine relationship. The heart that was once empty becomes full of peace and satisfaction.

Delighting in God transforms our perspective. Problems may still come, but they no longer control us. We have a deeper source of joy that remains steady even in difficult times.

Furthermore, the verse says, “thou shalt lift up thy face unto God.” This speaks of confidence and communion. There is no fear, no guilt, but a boldness that comes from being right with Him.

This is the ultimate purpose of returning to God—not just to receive blessings, but to enjoy Him. He is not merely a means to an end; He is the greatest treasure.

Return Now!

The call to return to the Almighty is not a burden, but an invitation. It is an opportunity to experience true progress, purification, prosperity, protection, provision, and pleasures.

Many today are searching for answers in the wrong places. They seek fulfillment in wealth, relationships, or achievements, yet remain unsatisfied. The truth is simple: apart from God, there is no lasting peace.

Returning to Him requires humility, repentance, and faith. It means acknowledging our need for God and surrendering our life to His will. But the rewards are immeasurable.

If you have drifted away, now is the time to return. If you have never truly come to God, now is the time to seek Him. The Almighty is ready to receive those who come to Him with a sincere heart.

Let us not delay. Let us return to the Almighty—and find in Him everything our soul truly needs.
