The True Purpose of Wealth: Using Riches for Good Works

“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
1 Timothy 6:17-19 (KJV)

In today’s fast-paced world, many people measure success by how much wealth they accumulate. Financial goals revolve around savings, investments, properties, and status symbols. But as believers in Christ, we are called to view riches through a far different lens—one shaped by eternal values, not temporary gain.

The Apostle Paul’s charge to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 gives clear instructions to those who are blessed with wealth: don’t let riches become your trust, but rather, let them become a tool for eternal good.

Let’s unpack this passage and discover why good works are the best and highest goal of wealth.

Riches Are Uncertain, But God Is Faithful

Paul begins in verse 17 with a strong caution: “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches…”

Wealth has a way of inflating the ego. It can deceive us into thinking we are self-sufficient, secure, and above others. But Paul reminds us that riches are uncertain. They can vanish in an instant—through economic downturns, disasters, or even death. Money may provide temporary comfort, but it can never provide eternal security.

Instead, Paul points us to the One who is always certain—“the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.” Our trust should never be in the gift, but in the Giver. When we see wealth as a blessing from God, not a product of our own brilliance, we begin to handle it with humility and purpose.

Rich in Good Works: The True Measure of Wealth

In verse 18, Paul gives the positive command: “That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate.”

Here lies the heart of biblical financial stewardship. God blesses some with wealth not so they can hoard or flaunt it, but so they can become rich in good works. The Bible does not condemn being rich; it condemns being rich for selfish gain.

When wealth is directed toward good works, it becomes an eternal investment. Whether it’s supporting missions, helping the poor, funding church projects, or assisting others in need, every peso given in love becomes a seed sown in heaven.

Paul uses two powerful phrases to describe the Christian’s attitude toward giving:

  • “Ready to distribute” – This speaks of generosity. A readiness implies eagerness, not reluctance. We should look for opportunities to give, not wait until we’re asked.
  • “Willing to communicate” – This means sharing and fellowshipping in the needs of others. It's about forming bonds of compassion, not merely transferring money.

In short, Paul is painting a picture of a Christian whose wealth flows outward in kindness and purpose.

Laying Up Treasure in Heaven

Verse 19 ties it all together: “Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

The world says, “Store up treasure on earth.” God says, “Store up treasure in heaven.”

Jesus echoed this in Matthew 6:19-21 when He said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth… But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”

Every act of generosity, every kind deed funded by your resources, is a deposit into your eternal account. Paul assures us that these good works are not wasted. They form a foundation against the time to come—a spiritual investment that lasts beyond death.

Moreover, Paul mentions that such a life helps us to lay hold on eternal life. He’s not saying we earn salvation through giving, but that our giving shows we’ve already embraced the eternal values of Christ’s Kingdom. A life marked by generosity proves that we truly treasure the things of God more than the things of earth.

Practical Ways to Be Rich in Good Works

If you’re a Christian blessed with financial resources, here are some ways you can fulfill 1 Timothy 6:17-19 in daily life:

  • Support Your Local Church Faithfully – Tithing and offerings support gospel work, missions, and community outreach.
  • Help the Needy Directly – Give to food banks, shelter ministries, or families you know who are struggling.
  • Start a Scholarship or Benevolent Fund – Use your wealth to invest in education or emergency needs of others.
  • Be a Financial Mentor – Use your knowledge to help others budget, save, and steward their money wisely.
  • Live Below Your Means – Reject the pressure to keep up appearances, and channel the extra to eternal causes.

These good works are not just temporary help—they are kingdom-building investments.

Enjoy God's Blessings Without Idolatry

Let’s not overlook one beautiful truth in verse 17: God “giveth us richly all things to enjoy.” Christianity does not call us to guilt for having blessings. Rather, we are to enjoy God’s gifts with thankfulness, not pride, and with open hands, not clenched fists.

We can enjoy a home, a business, a family vacation—so long as our enjoyment doesn’t lead to entitlement or greed. The line between enjoying and idolizing is drawn by whether our wealth ends with us, or flows through us.

Final Thoughts

The world urges us to chase wealth for comfort, pride, and power. But God’s Word points us to a higher goal: to use wealth for good works that glorify God and bless others. This is the most fulfilling and eternal use of riches.

You don’t need to be a billionaire to be rich in good works. You just need a willing heart and an open hand. When we use what we have for the Lord’s purposes, we build a legacy that outlives us and honors Him forever.

As Christian stewards, let’s aim not just to grow in income—but to grow in generosity, purpose, and eternal impact.
